True, but are game fun? I find sandbox play enjoyable, and I feel games are more going that way. But I work in retail and from what I have gauged is that it is wearing thin on some groups of people.
I guess I am waiting for the next big thing. I play both old school and new. I mean if I didn't I wouldn't be here EO is old school after all. I just find it weird that after all these years I still can't figure what is my fav genre. for me it changes to much.

Zeta look cute fillies.
I can't think of too many titles that genre shifted to sandbox style gameplay. If anything, we're moving away from open-world exploration into more event driven / cinematic focused gaming and not the other way around. And open-world != sandbox.
And, honestly, I don't really find EO to really be all that old school. At most, it harkens to it because there's a map to fill in but ... really, that's about it. Mechanically speaking, it's pretty far from old school.
Edit: In more Operation Rainfall news, by adding the games for pre-order as well. Goddamn, son, goddamn.
Indeed...

Games with sprite graphics (older Mario, Sonic, Zelda, etc.) tend to hold up MUCH better than those with 3-D character Models (Brave Fencer Musashi, Gex, FFVII, etc.) imho.
As for the fun factor, I think it's all about what genre you're talking about.
Aside from select Cave titles and the Touhou series (sprites, again[!!]), I still have a hard time finding SHMUPS even close to as fun as games like Thunder Force III/IV, Raiden, and Gradius/Parodius.
With 2-D Side-scrollers, series like Metroid, Megaman, Mario, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, River City Ransom (Kunio-kun), Sonic, and Castlevania are still far more fun than damn near anything that has come out more recently, with few exceptions (Cave Story, La-Mulana, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Scott Pilgrim, etc.). Hell, Sonic Team can't even make proper 2-D Sonic games anymore.
Although, even with FPSs, I still prefer DOOM over most newer games in the genre XD

Angry letter in the mail this morning, blank ink carved into the paper. This industry is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The forums are extended spam inboxes and the spam inboxes are full of blood and when the delete buttons finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their good taste and passion will foam up about their waists and all the fans and localization teams will look up and shout "Take our money!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

Wolverine? I'd recommend finding a hilariously half-edited version. With crude CGI and visible stunt wires. Because then it's at least good for a laugh. :3

Forgot about this. My Mionix NAOS 5000 and Propus 380 came in yesterday:

look at dat glare, mmm.
The mousepad has ... something on it that reacts strangely to the flash.
Real ... strangely...[/spoiler]
In other news, I need to buy an actual camera. I'll probably re-take shots when I get home and feel like futzing with lighting more.
As for the mouse itself, it's probably the most comfortable grip I've had in a long, long time. The mouse itself reacts fine and tracks perfectly thus far. The mousepad alleviates that awful scraping sound when I was using the table itself and the mouse glides perfectly on it. May need a few days to adapt to the mouse but all looks well.
