There's nothing wrong with the "aluminum" variant.

Re: Recent Purchases Thread
"aluminum" far predates "aluminium"
"aluminium" is a strange conformation to modern naming traditions. yet somehow "platinum" is still ok to the ears of europeans?

Re: Recent Purchases Thread
I fail to see how using an alternate, and accepted, spelling of a word would make anybody less intelligent than somebody else. Noodles is correct, "aluminum" predates "aluminium". The mass production of the metal in the U.S under the "aluminum" name led to that spellings widespread use in the U.S, even after the other form had become the accepted spelling for scientific purposes.
I guess "aluminium" is technically more correct, as it is the spelling that the scientific community conforms to. Language evolves, and changes, based on a number of factors, and region is one of them. American English is very different from, say, British English, or Australian English. There are tons of spelling differences, not to mention differences in pronunciation. American English isn't even the same over the entire country, because the country is fucking huge and extremely diverse. The idea that the variant spelling and pronunciation would be somehow 'wrong', yet still be used by tens, or hundreds, of millions of people everyday, is incredibly silly and is based in some sort of quasi-bigoted, often Euro centrist, pretension. A word being pronounced and spelled differently in the United States does not automatically make it 'retarded' or 'wrong', it makes it part of a regional, or national, dialect.

Re: Recent Purchases Thread
Good news, Bad news time!
- book is street-dated for July 10th, but I placed the order with S&S moooonths ago out of the hope we'd get it in advance of the street date
- Thursday, I notice that Ingram (our distribution warehouse) has copies in stock. Meaning that if I added it to the outgoing Ingram order I'd have Friday. But I already have it on order, right? WAHWAAWAWAAAAAAAH.
- So I call S&S and check status. I'm told it'll ship Friday and arrive on the 12th or 13th. My bad fucking luck!
- TODAY! Get in boxes of S&S anyway, and lo and behold THERE IT IS!! Major excitement.
- BUT IT IS DAMAGED
- so I call and report the damage and they tell me "donate or destroy"
- which is fucking code word for "kino just got this book for free, suckers"
- hells yeah
