I am really stressed out. We've lived in this building since 2003 and have never so much as been late with a rent payment. So this morning, I get a knock at the door from the landlord, who, while too busy to come by and give us the new keys to the basement storage area, fix the leaky pipe under the kitchen sink, or do jack shit about the crazy parking situation, had plenty of time to come and demand the rent from us.
Which, all considered, isn't unreasonable, except for the fact that I had mailed the payment some time ago. I was like, yeah, buddy, I sent that forever ago, it should have been there some time ago. I told him, basically, I'm not paying you again for this month's rent, you won't set up an online bill pay option, you live 2 hours out of town, the fucking mail is pretty much our only convenient option for payment. Okay, let me amend that. The only convenient and non-sketchy option for payment. Allegedly, I could just hand over cash to the neighbor guy who is only ever home at completely random hours of the night and who also goes to their church, except, A) I'm not Lindsey Lohan scoring a coke fix, I don't need to be tracking down someone I barely know with an enormous wad of cash at odd hours of the night, and B) I might as well cram that money in a brightly colored bottle and send it out to sea with the hopes they'll someday get it. Seriously, dude doesn't even bother shutting his door half the time, it doesn't exactly inspire a strong sense of security. So yes, mailing the payment is pretty much what we have to do.
Now, if I had just used a check, it would have been no big deal to stop payment and get some cash for him. Except this time? Of fucking course. I ran out of checks, and being too lazy to go get more, just said screw it and sent a money order.
I kept the money order receipt, but getting a refund on a money order is one of those pain in the ass, submit a statement in writing with proper receipts, 30 days later you get your money back situations, and frankly, I just do not have the money to pay for rent a week after having paid it already.
So goddamn yay. Fingers crossed that freaking payment shows up in the mailbox returned to sender or shows up in their mailbox a few days late due to postal issues, or else I'm pretty sure the landlord will not hesitate to use this whole thing as an excuse to bum rush the gays out of his property and rent our home out to yet another "good", God-fearing young woman from his church.
