I hate this topic because I see things I want to comment on and realize I'll end up sounding like [s]a douchebag[/s]my normal self.
@DRUGSDRUGSDRUGS - Off-hand, PA isn't super-lenient on it. Any possession charge is still a ~6 month loss of license (mandatory). Possession cutoff is around the 30g (~1oz) mark (i.e., <30 is 30 days in jail and up to $500 and >30 is up to 1 year and $5000). So ... yeah.
Edit: Above is for weed, since I realized after posting I deleted that bit~~~
Texas is so much more lenient; off-hand, it's 2 oz (~60g) and the license suspension is optional. On top of that, many of the light charges can just be brushed off with some community service or drug awareness classes.
...don't look at me like that. Gots to know these things, nahmean.
Edit: Whoa now, YEARS of jail time? What the fuck did he have, slave labor in the back cooking meth?

Actually, it's not yours that I was "I'D BE A DICK" over. I'm fine discussing drugs, it's something I know fairly well.
Anyway, 3rd offense and if it's heroin is a few years of jail time (3-ish, I think; depending on amount could be straight up 5+). I was under the assumption of weed the entire time and that requires some serious amount to get you "years." Like, we had a DEA bust down here at a friend-of-a-friend's place and even that didn't result in jail time (though, to be fair, they found nothing).
Most of my friends have done some form of some illegal substance, myself included, and it covers ... well, everything. In fact, I think most my closest friends all at the very least smoke weed. There's really nothing bad about it in moderation use and it is a great "fuck this all, gonna unwind" thing. Personally, I've outgrown most of my drug use, though I'm still a habitual smoker and heavy drinker so who the fuck am I to say anything really.
@drugs
Just to play devil's advocate; Maxine, you've mentioned that your mom (or dad?) is a smoker. Thus, they are a drug addict. They are physically addicted to a drug.
You have a drug addict for a parent.
It just happens that drug is legal and regulated.
Imagine if nicotine was made illegal tomorrow. Would they be able to quit? What if they went to jail? Wouldn't you rage and curse and wish that they could receive medical help, that the state wouldn't be so narrow-minded, that the laws should be different?
I just feel sorry for drug addicts who go to jail. There's no reason to go to jail for a non-violent offense. Possession and consumption, of course, are entirely different from motor vehicle violations; driving under the influence is just plain dumb in any circumstance. (lol affordable and practical public transport)
Just playing devil's advocate here. Glad that guy is out of you and your sister's life.
