Errrrm, I don't think it's insulting, but it does tend me to to sound like a cat-call, but at the same time it's "how it's said". Seriously I wouldn't have a problem with it. I have a problem being called "chick" though.
o_O; I tend to call people "hon'" which has oddly set off a few people in my drive through. I'll be all like *big smile* "Here you go, hon'. And have a great day!" And they are like "Don't call people hon! It's derogatory and feels like you are looking down on me!" ... o_o;; Uhh.... what? I thought it was a cute term of endearment. My mom calls me that all the time. I dunno. It's just a word that is so engrained into my personality that I couldn't stop using it even if I tried to. I don't even realize half the time that I use it.

They're obviously offended that he's using an adjective as a noun.

Two things:
One, I certainly wouldn't be offended by being called "girlie." It sounds cute, to me. And if I were, I think I'd just say that I didn't like to called that instead of insinuating the person calling me it was being nasty.
Two, I do however understand that a person may simply not want to be called a certain way for any number of reasons, no matter how harmless the address is. Sometimes it's nothing more than a matter of not wanting people to take liberties with how they call you.
In context, though, it's hard to agree that him saying "girlie" is as demeaning as this person made it sound.
