Oh, I posted what happened today earlier, but ItL shows no record of it.

So, I went to where we were gonna meet up, and she did show up. We went for coffee, made semi-awkward small talk, and then she excused herself after about 20 minutes. I made sure to ask if her boyfriend was ok with us hanging out, and she said it was fine. I don't think it was fine, but whatever. So after that I went and bought a book, and rented all the Ultimate Spider-Man comics from the library. It's time for me to read up on superheroes, play video games, and be awesome once again, at least for a while longer. If it messes me up this bad to almost be in a relationship, I'm not going to initiate one for a while. I feel mostly better now. Thanks for listening to my shit guys.

Trifkin, I sympathize with your situation. And I totally get what you said about the relationship being strained because your will was ignored. I've been in a similar place, and I wish I could say that meant I had advice for you.

Not to go into too much detail, both to avoid derailment and out of respect for the situation, when it happened with me I certainly didn't feel like the ball was in my court, that it was up to me to decide to change the distance between me and the guy friend. I felt guilty for not feeling the way he would have wanted, and simultaneously resenting the sense that I was now in this "leads people on" box.

Well, the idea of me leading anyone is still laughable to me. Anyway, after this happened, I resolved to restrain most outright affection because I didn't want to complicate things for him. However, he really didn't dial his affectionate behavior down. I tried to just not react to it, to kind of be casually receptive but a little detached, and felt even more guilty for not reciprocating. Instead I just started getting more uncomfortable with our relationship and then feeling guilty for that too. I don't blame him for not wanting to censor himself but it's just very . . . claustrophobic.

And really it's not his fault. I know he feels lonely, much like I do. He didn't exactly do anything wrong. It's just the situation. It's the kind of thing where neither one of us quite knows what to do.

In any case, I'm sorry it's happened. Some of what you said to me that one night has a good bit more context now, I think.
