People who go to work when they're sick make me mad, because then they risk getting you sick. But I understand is situations like retail, where if you call in sick you risk getting fired or in trouble, or even at best don't get paid and then can't afford food and shit.

So today I was hanging out with the girl I like, and it went well. We decided on ice cream, and went to Marble Slab Creamery (Canada version of Cold Slab Creamery) and I paid. We sat there and talked for over an hour, and it was quite enjoyable. But when I was walking her back to the bus stop, she started talking about that guy who dumped her.

She was talking about how he invited her over and after a while initiated a game of truth or dare (transparent move, much) and they ended up making out for 2 hours, which apparently she doesn't do ever. But that's not the kind of thing you tell someone you would be interested in dating, is it? I guess she only sees me as a friend. I'm not sure if I really should keep at this if that's the case.

Hmm.

@Going into work sick: Yeah. The retail situation is kind of a pain in the ass. Having worked in two very different retail environments that were both swarming with disease (a drug store and a bank) I know all too well the horror of trying to call in sick. It was universally assumed, because of how rarely we got sick at the bank, on account of being constantly exposed to others peoples illness, that we were faking, and in my case, that I was faking because I was hung over. So that sucked. Basically meant that people always showed up to work sick. Of course it’s incredibly difficult for an employer to fire someone about calling in sick, and hourly employees should always be sages of their HR policy. Most people just fear retribution, but in few cases it’s actually legal. For example, at the bank our boss could only question our illness after 3 consecutive days, after which we needed a doctor’s note. But few people exercised this, because it was really not the monetary pressure that made us go in sick (especially given that we had ample sick pay in addition to our vacation and FMLA time), it was the social pressure. We had very thin coverage, and we were all friendly, which meant that if you didn’t show up, you were actually making someone else’s life difficult. Guilt, in our case, not money, kept us going to work sick.

@Immune systems: For a year I lived mostly on cup noodle, cheap beer, Wild Turkey bourbon, and vitamins. What I can say from that experience is that you should take your vitamins.

@$7.50/hour: Man. I’m happy I live in Washington. I’ve never been subject to a minimum wage lower than $7.16/hr, and that was in 2004, and even then I wasn’t making that amount. Actually I’ve never worked for minimum wage. Lowest I ever worked for was $8.50/hr, in 2007, and at the time the WA minimum wage was $7.93/hr. We also don’t have a state income tax. So that helped, especially when you’re trying to cover the mortgage while your father undergoes a quintuple bypass. Of course exploitation in the work place runs deeper than wages. Certainly if you calculate all the time, as a foolish young man, I spent working off the clock, I wasn’t making as much as I thought I was.

@Zamisk (and Canada): When I lived in Canada it always weirded me out how you guys have slightly different names for things, but you mean “Cold Stone” I think. Anyway. Girl problems. First of all, I’m glad you haven’t turned into a withered mess and given up all hope, and that you two enjoyed yourselves. In regards to teenagers playing truth and dare and then making out for 2 hours despite “never doing that”; teenagers are tightly wound balls of hormones, rarely do conscious choices actually reflect actions when it comes to things of a sexual nature, especially at that age. You probably shouldn’t dwell on it too much. And her telling you that doesn’t mean she only sees you as a friend, maybe it means she trusts you, like Noodles says, and that’s a good thing. Or maybe it doesn’t mean anything at all. The point is there’s no point in throwing in the towel at this juncture. I think eventually you’ll be able to decipher whether or not she’s interested in you, and then you guys can either stay friends or move beyond that, but you really shouldn’t invest so much in tiny moments or occurrences. Keep at it.

@My current situation: Bringing myself back from the dead is a giant pain in the ass. Its like being in a fucking Kafka novel.

Hm. Alright. Maybe that was just cold feet talking. And yes, I meant Cold Stone. I couldn't remember the exact name...
