Personally, I view the current school system as having several flaws in many many areas. My sister is one of the most intelligent people in the world. She can sit on her computer and do up a budget quicker than anyone I know and when it comes to money and figures she knows how to work things...
but you sit her in front of a computer and tell her to do algebra problems and you're going to get a blank stare. She can't do it. Not for lack of trying. I've tried to help her. She's gotten tutors. Hell most of her community college education was just her trying to get through Pre-Algebra classes that they offered.
I don't think its fair to be graded on something that a person just sometimes cannot do. It doesn't make them an idiot or even unskilled in any way. To be perfectly honest even I have a hard time trying to figure out what half of those math problems were suppose to do for my life.
And then there's my sister Clarissa. Most of her grades were Cs. However, last year she realized that she wants to be a psychologist - possibly a sociologist - and then she realized the schooling involved and her wanting to get into a good school. These past two years she has made higher grades than she ever has now that she's actually found an interest in something. Which is sad because I look back on her middle school when she was thrust into the easy learning classes. It all just came down to an obvious lack of interest and attention in what she was being taught. I remember even feeling that way when she was a sophomore. She asked me to help her figure out her algebra problems. ^_^; I would start trying to help and get to a certain point (because while I was good at math I no longer have that knowledge anymore) but she would end up being able to figure out the rest from the point that I left off. I remember walking away thinking "you needed my help? I don't think I was very helpful."

@Scy - oh, don't worry. I would never be so blind as to say we should tear down the school system altogether. I just think it needs a good revamp somewhere. I don't know how. I definitely do not have the solution. I wouldn't even pretend to try to come up with one. I just know that there are obvious flaws and they are exceedingly unfair.
@Clarissa - ^_^ Her interest first started with "psychology" as a general thing. She didn't even know WHAT parts she wanted to like. She just liked watching shows like NCIS and SVU and think "OMG I would LOVE to be able to get into a person's mind like that."
From there, over this past year and half or so, she's been looking into the field more and more, looking into the schools. Getting more information. And as time goes on she's finding that she seems more and more interested in sociology.
I don't know set she is on this currently. I still think she's kinda still peeking into the many different fields yet. I *think* she is aware of the Macro vs Micro thing. But I couldn't tell you. I think her current plan is to go to my community college and just take a broad range of those sorts of classes.
I did my best to fill her in on what exactly sociology teaches as I had a class in it. However, I warned her that I made a "C" in it so my words were probably not the greatest to go by. ^_^;;
I think she's just interested in people in general and how the react to things. I don't know if she's into the whole "shrink" part of it or whatever. I had thought at first she was interested in something in the police field as she had listed the TV examples like that. But I don't think so. She tells me though that she really does enjoy chatting with her friends and trying to get inside their minds a little bit and try to think of problems in a psychological tense - but again, I don't know if that's exactly what her interest is in, either. Of course at this point, she might not know, either ^_^
It's just great, though. She started her junior year telling us that she was probably not interested in going to college and now she seems very college oriented. I'm glad that something has finally caught her interest.

It depends, Zamisk, are you a sloucher or do you generally like to keep your back straight?

^_^ Then if she has any questions in the future I'll keep you in mind so she might be able to get a better answer than I could provide.
I still have my sociology text bok that I recommended she could take a look at. She hasn't yet. *shrugs* I think she's still just trying to figure how her life (like the rest of us) at this point, haha.
