The house recently got a couple of 70" LED HDTVs wall-mounted in the living room (so ridiculous/awesome) but I've been trying to explain to housemates why I HATE how the motion interpolation kills the cinematic feel of movies for me and makes everything look like a behind-the-scenes mini-feature instead of the actual movie. They don't see it and probably think I'm crazy.

So I'm curious if anyone in here knows what I'm referring to (google "soap opera effect"), and if so, if your opinion of it is on the "pew pew pew" end of the scale (like mine) or the "It's so crisp and real-looking, I love it, let the stubborn purists cling to the past, we're moving on!" end.

Having said that, though, we watched Star Trek (the reboot) last night and it wasn't quite as distracting as it has been on most of the other stuff I've watched on those TVs so far.

And yes, it's great for sports and other live programming with a lot of movement. But Egh. Leave my films alone.

I know exactly what you mean! And no one understands when I try to explain it. It is ridiculously distracting when I try to watch things on TVs like that. @_@ It confuses my puny human brain. There are certain movies I've tried to watch on those and I just can't take them seriously. I found myself giggling all the way through My Wife Is A Gangster 2 (or was it 3?) and I don't even remember if we finished it.

I know what you're talking about, and I agree that it's distracting, but I also believe we all should get over it. The only reason it's strange to us is because we're used to a common framerate in movies that only exists because of technical limitations in place 60 years ago. If we can erase that pre-conceived notion of how crisp movement in a movie is supposed to be, directors will start using actual modern framerate capabilities, and movies will end up being MORE immersive as a result.

From what I just read, it has to do with watching a film at [whatever the refresh rate of the screen is] instead of 25Hz, which is the classic film refresh rate. Then, does your discomfort only occur with older movies that you have seen at 25Hz before, or also with new ones that you haven't seen before?
