Ah, sorry for overgeneralizing. I meant the state governments of course. I forgot that they're separated very much from the national government. Well, the same thing goes for Europe really. EU government is still separated from national governments. And people here complained about all the money going to rescuing Greece from bankruptcy too, so that phenomenon is familiar as well.

As for the flood protection thing, from Maxine's description it seemed that flooding of some extent is fairly common there. I just assumed people would do the same thing over there as has been done here. Your feet get wet, you increase the height/width of the dikes you're behind, build better drainage pumps, etc.

@Kimiko: No! Don't be sorry! I don't mean to sound angry or anything. Being from Europe and living in the United States, as well as having almost all my family in Europe (including in your neck of the woods) I'm just really familiar with confusion/lack of information on many things American, just as Americans are of stuff in Europe. Flooding IS common in some areas, but we're very spread out in this country, so floods usually seem extremely isolated and not as systemic as having bad/not big enough levees and dikes. This much damage and flooding, as Maxine said, in highly populated areas like the New York-New Jersey metro area is NOT as common. And those are precisely the places where the MOST damage can be done. So its a pretty crappy and uncommon situation that a storm of this strength and size would hit such a densely populated area. Just the cost from lost productivity in New York is probably going to be massive, and then you start thinking of damage to property, as well as death and injury.

Anyway. Hurricanes are big bullies and I'm happy I live in the Northwest.

@Lucasfilm sale: If I were an exec at Dark Horse comics I would be crapping myself right now. Dark Horse makes a pretty penny selling Star Wars comic books, and given that Disney also owns Marvel I have a feeling that Dark Horse wont be holding those licenses for long...

Individually, a powerful tornado vs a powerful hurricane -- if you have a basement or storm shelter. A lot of homes in Oklahoma do not because of the clay soil. True, IF you can get underground in time, the "worst" that can happen is your entire home and all your belongings get absolutely destroyed. You're looking at "only" a hundred deaths, but it's over within maybe 6-8 hours (Often a single storm system will spawn multiple tornadoes, or the circulation will drop and lift over a scattered path).

However, as for a natural disaster -- I'd much, much, MUCH rather live somewhere prone to hurricanes than go back to Oklahoma. Shit is SCARY yo. We're talking every single year you've got HUNDREDS of potential threats. Oklahoma has more tornadoes per square mile than anywhere else on the PLANET.

I tell you what. If they fix all the shit edits Lucas has put in over the years, I wouldn't mind them tweaking up episodes IV through VI a bit.
