@Starfe
The long-distance won't be too bad. It's only until he graduates in the Spring, and it's a 3 hour drive so I'll be back on weekends to visit.
Right now I'm freaking out about my housing situation. I thought I had a solid lined up with a roommate, but she might not get her job in Fairfax... so I don't know now what she'll do. If she's moving to NoVA, we'll room together. If she doesn't... I guess I'll get an efficiency as close to my office as possible. I think I'd rather live in a shoebox and spend a bit more than hassle with strangers for roommates.

My friend didn't get her job. I'm trying to convince her to live with me in the way cheaper suburbs where a mutual friend lives. It means an 80 minute commute for me, but the advantage would be that when I get home, I'm within 10 minutes of my friends. Also I'd be saving a ton of money, and driving south to see Mr Kino would be super convenient. I could also take the train, as I'd be within walking distance of the Amtrak. I'd take the train into DC, so at least I wouldn't be driving. I could sleep, read, or get work done during my commute, and my benefits include commuter reimbursement.

All of those things are good to have, but even with things to do, I bet that 80 minute commute is going to get very annoying, very quickly.
Still, being close to both friends and Mr. Kino are very big pluses. Saving money is also good. I'd probably do it if I were in your position.

If you have commuter reimbursement then absolutely take the Amtrak. I love it.

You probably won't get as much done during commutes as you expect, but yes, having some rest in between your job and hurrying home is a definite plus of public transport.
I hear that America is really huge, so maybe an 80 minute commute is small to you. Then again, I don't think American days are much longer than our 24 hours, so adding nearly three hours to your workday is quite a lot.

PS3 never lets me play a game without installing a new update anymore. Never.
