Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
My roomate is pissing me off with his antiquated notions about gender and identity and masculine and feminine.
If I want to raise children with my potential future wife or androgynous partner, and I can teach my sons how to build a car from the ground up and how to be assertive and how to be kind and how to treat people, then what the hell difference does it make what fleshy bits do or do not dangle between my legs?! He says, "but those little boys will always wonder about the authenticity of their masculinity," and he says, "as little boys they'll think a certain way and as a mother you'll react a certain way," blah blah blah.
Sorry if this rant doesn't make sense. It's 5:49 am and I haven't slept yet.
EDIT: I didn't capitalize some things. Must've been pretty out of it.

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
Nah. Your rant makes complete sense, Trif.
Normally I leave people entitled to their views on gender... but when you bring children into the picture, especially someone else's, then you are just being toxic and detrimental. What is feminine or masculine is almost entirely societal in nature and serves your theoretical child no worth. Nor will it make them grow up with any more or less friends; there are plenty of loners growing up who try to abide to the gender binary. Surely it impacts the kinds of friends they make, but that aside.
Nor does it at all offer anything of worth to their future career 99.999% of the time (the 0.001% is nothing pleasant). What will bring worth to a child, their future, their friendships, and their careers are good values. Courage. Strength. Integrity. Critical-thinking. Self-worth. Values of life and the human tribe. Things like that... None of them belong to "feminine" or "masculine", and feminine and masculine in of themselves do not belong to women and men.
Such insecurities... of being too feminine or masculine, ultimately serve only as a distraction, and weakness. Not ask yourself "Is this not masculine enough?", instead ask "Is this right?" or "Is this for me?".
You'll do well to raise a child without such toxic influences, should your path ever take you on that course.

^ The genesis doesn't really matter one way or another. Meat, society. It's all the same. Make children able to do what you want them to do. Confusion and fear can be minimised with any luck, but not negated. Might be safer to improve their ability to manage feelings and account for setbacks on the course to a goal, or at least grit their teeth. They'll be mulch like the rest of us in a century.

Ah, Hong.
How do you do that? You always know what to say. <3
Thank you guys for your reassurance. I spent a solid three hours trying to talk to said roommate last night about the gender thing, among some other equally unsettling stuff. I think because he was raised by a single mother he is insecure about his own masculinity, which is sad because that tells me some unkind buttface has probably called into question that masculinity, and he is projecting that onto the theoretical future children we were discussing. He was also very convinced that HE should be siring those children with me, so that's quite troubling. :/ I'm super ready to stop attracting men into my life who want to marry me and make babies. Especially sexist men.

Don't want to sound harsh or judgmental but you sure end up with some creepy roommates.

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
No need to suspect; humanity as a whole has called his masculinity into question. As common as eating bread.

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
im sure he's nice and open-minded etc but im not sure what that counts for when the dude basically is saying he wants to inseminate you
if i were a girl and my roommate was saying he wanted to sire children with me i'd start carrying a weapon
you know i always see ads on craigslist etc for single women looking for other female roommates...

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
It isn't so much "I wanna inseminate ya!" as it is "I have dreams about how we've been in love in past lives and I kinda wish we were in this one because I can picture our children and they'd be so beautiful so I'm a drunken level of sad and weepy that you don't love me and wanna make all de babies. Also when I wake up and I'm sober again I will claim not to remember any of this and behave as if nothing happened." Apparently. @-@; But this is the first I'm hearing about this. The rest of the time he has been 100% platonic in his behavior.
If I find a different roommate at the same or similar rate I'm paying now, I'll leave, as has been my plan anyway. This was just the quickest, easiest, cheapest/only real option I had at the time. And we've all been getting along really well up to this point, really the easiest roommate situation I've had in a long time. I live with the son of a mechanic/future master brewer (he's currently rebuilding a vespa!) and two electrical engineers in the coast guard. We watch tv, cook good food, help each other with projects, then leave each other alone to do our own things.

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
My mom is of the old mindset that you should not live with a guy you love until you've married. It's things like this that only prove how wrong the concept is. I don't believe you truly know someone until after you've lived with them. Just like the internet, meeting people for only a few hours of the day, you only see the side of themselves that they choose to let show. When you are living with them, twenty four hours of every day, they can't hide behind their carefully crafted public facade.

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
AZ and I lived together for years before we got married, probably 6 years or so. I've known her since I was 9 but you don't truly see all the nuances until you've lived together. It may be one of the reasons why when we were asked what'll change after we got married, we both said nothing. If you're already committed and you truly know one a other it really shouldn't change things.
Sports is what's raging me at the moment. I have no interest in sports, any of them. Even competitive videogames don't gain my attention. How is that so hard to understand? I care not for a ball being thrown, kicked, carried or hit around a field, green, pitch, court or my other form of motion and location. It's meaningless to me. Why is that hard to understand?
Now, if there was Pro Bending, I might be interested, just maybe. Or Quidditch. Otherwise, no.

Re: Rant/Complain Thread: u mad?
I'm so with you there on the sports thing. I don't get how people can have endless hours of conversation on football players. -_-; And seriously, I find it the biggest offense in the world that a football player who chases a ball around the field and risks nothing is paid more in this country than even five of our military men put together.
That in High School I had to deal with the obnoxious football players that were rude and insolent to teachers, made poor grades, were better respected in the school compared to someone like me who did her damnedest to be respectful and make good grades. Why did I even have to be placed in the same classroom as those shitheads?
