I don't get what the hell this is suppose to do. Why do they think that a person's real name would stop them from acting like an ass?
You guys know me as either Penna or Maxine. Call me as you like, I've got nothing to hide and at the end of the day it still wouldn't stop me from yelling at stupid grammar or admitting that I have an appetite for yaoi (and that currently I am imagining Theodore from P3P in a rather intense relationship with MCmale).
And it certainly wouldn't stop half of the 4chan-assholes.
Are they hoping for some kind of better restrictions on the forums? And what's to stop a person from inputting false data. I can be Maxine Smith at a residence I held when I was living when my dad was stationed in GA.
The logic... is failing...
Of course, I don't know how bad the Blizzard forums are. But after seeing the THOSE forums (do not ask if you cannot guess) I could understand a little how bad they may be. And I'm sorry to say that the best cure is just to close them and not even bother with the damn situation. They'll form their own communities elsewhere with people who are NOT representatives of the company and are not afraid to carry out their own rules and properly subjugate as it needs.

Not having an official forum for your own online games is just a little weak. Just saying. I mean, sure, their forums are pretty much full of asshats (and that's me being nice~) but they do serve as a place for, at least for WoW, each server to just do their own thing. Back in EQ, there were individual fan community message boards for this because there wasn't one for the servers. It's a nice thing to have, honestly.
What the fuck you do on the Starcraft or Diablo ones, I don't know. I guess bitch, moan, and being a douchebag.
As for preventing false names, that may be possible for future accounts. For current ones, you require some substantial proof in order to fully change your name (like, proof that you're changing your name). Plus, it'd be awkward as fuck if your account got hacked and you have to prove you're really that fake name (the current process is faxing some ID).
As for them thinking it'll stop people behaving like assholes, I'm not sure that was ever the case. It's just something people point out as a possibility (and one that'll probably do nothing). It's more for social network integration most likely. Thanks, Facebook..
All in all, it seems pretty shortsighted to be perfectly honest. But, since they turned around and canceled it, I suppose it's moot.
There's a part of me, sadly, that isn't putting it past them as "look we're doing something stupid ... alright, we listened and not doing something stupid SEE WE LISTEN!" publicity stunt.

Interesting.
I love capitalism, and I'm not a huge fan of interfering with free trade; existing immigration policy sort of does. Whether or not we should open our borders is a legitimate debate, and I don't begrudge anyone for favoring open borders, though I would disagree with them (our federal government has Constitutional authority to protect our borders, and states should certainly be able to do whatever they want). The debate about what we should do about illegal immigrants is a bit more set in stone for me, since they, you know, broke our laws.
So let's draw a line between "anti-immigrant sentiment" and "anti-illegal sentiment," the latter of which is perfectly legit and not in the least bit racist (hell, I'm concerned about the Canadian border too). The author of the above article fails to do that, seamlessly transitioning from one subject to another.
Rant ahead.
Want illegals out of the country? Fine. Go Arizona. I'm all for that. I know a lot of people think the law's racist, and that concern's also worth addressing, but, since I favor state sovereignty, I think patently assuming that racism must occur shows an unsettling distrust among some Americans for the people of Arizona. If legal Mexicans are disproportionately inconvenienced, then they ought to move and take with them whatever economic benefits they would have rendered to the state. If the worst really is true, Arizona will either change its policies, sink, or prosper as a racist state (and as an added benefit, act as a magnet for all other racists in the country so they can leave the other states alone).
Want hardworking legal immigrants out of the country? Fuck you. If someone's willing to provide a greater amount of output for whatever they're getting paid, then you'll just have to put up with the competition. Don't like it? Too bad.
Now that that's out of the way, I totally agree that any negative sentiment directed toward legal Mexican workers is totally unwarranted and has no place in a supposedly capitalist (I know, I know, we haven't really been capitalist for a century >_>) country. I guess what this union's doing, though, is arguing that we should not penalize lawbreakers. It all amounts to a fairly silly appeal to emotion (a terrible argument's last resort) and straw man arguments against those who dislike illegal immigration, but have no real problem with legal immigrants.
It would probably be a crisis if we up and hauled away every illegal immigrant in the country right now, but first, that's a ridiculously impractical undertaking that wouldn't find a foothold in the most draconian bill congress could conjure up. Secondly, even if that did happen, our country would stagger for awhile and our residents would have to find a means of fixing the economy--taking up those jobs. And perhaps companies would have to raise their wages to boot.
So this whole article really just made me scratch my head. I don't think this unions efforts add anything to the illegal immigration debate at all.
