Because before EOIV's links, we just had Chases. And Chases required you to already have someone using that element, which is not nearly as helpful.

Personally, I use my Landy as "do some damage and buff the rest of the attackers in an all-out assault" rather than Links. Subbed with Nightseeker and equipped lightly, he out-speeds most 5th stratum enemies and the rest of the party without resorting to Vanguard, which is rather nice.

And I think you are right.

I didn't mind using Vanguard in main game for normal encounters since (1)it cost few TP, with 5-turn duration; (2)it adds damage to your attack (more with Initiative), which can compensate the lost turn if the battle last for longer than 2 turns.

The problem with using Vanguard on random encounters is that it eats up a turn. 3 of the 4 other party members deal damage as well, often at a higher per-hit premium. The +30% bonus when ganging up on enemies is just extra fun.

Both maxed Vanguard and Initiative adds 40% bonus damage (not sure it is x1.8 or x1.96 though). And again, it depends on how many times your L can hit after using Vanguard. In my case, most normal encounters ended in 2nd turn with the overpower Poison Circle and Dismiss Blast. But when I can't do that for some reason (like high poison resist), I would love to have Vanguard.

Vanguard is another 40% damage, which is really nice, and assured going first. Neither is really necessary in most fights, but nice to have when it counts. Most of the damage comes from critical hits on Chase Bind and Accel Drive anyway in my party, so...

Well, it finally happened. I beat the final boss of EO4. Wow that ending, it was so simple, but so heartwarming. Just seeing that little montage in the beginning, I almost felt like tearing up. It was just so... nostalgic, in a way.

Anyway, before I seriously tackle the sixth labyrinth, I'm working on the sidequests I didn't get around to in the main game. Seriously, I can't believe I didn't bother getting the frog parts, or exploring the Golden Lair for an Ice Stone. I guess I'm just too lazy sometimes.
