I felt the old guy was another Highlander, possibly a mentor/father figure to the protag.

Well I realize that he's supposed to find her very early on in the game, but the area in which she is found resembles the 5th stratum. So much so that it would be easy to assume that's where it was.

But as I said, it is likely some kind of pod/suspended animation chamber he stumbled upon.

After watching the PV 3 times:

I think what I hate most about Japanese anime/games is that they often make the characters act (have the same reactions/mannerisms) as if they were from Japan. You know, despite not being Japanese.

Hopefully, they don't fall into this =/

Honestly the PV made me even more confident that this won't fall into a standard cliche-fest plot. From the animated cutscenes they've shown, it seems like the game is taking itself very seriously and Frederica's character actually seems mature as opposed to the standard loli-type.
Really the only room for joke characters as far as I can tell is Arthur and Racoona, which isn't bad at all.
