On the third strata and as much as I'm enjoying Story Mode, it's all the other classes I don't have that I want to play with but change class is no good.

It's weird that Resting is only 2 levels but changing class costs 1/2 your levels. Apparently it's also bugged? So it's no good in Story mode unless you're swapping to a similar class.

Having said that, L's an R are still annoying. L's with their skill allocations being all over the place and R's having to use a stance before they can use an attack. If they remake EO2, I hope they keep Stance's as Passive's.

Any suggestions on which Story chars make good candidates for which class? I want to keep my H and G as they are, but the other 3 I don't mind switching up. Not sure if I'll need an M in the long run.

Change Class also has the functionality of Retire, so you'll gain extra stat points and extra skill points in addition to changing class.

It's not bugged, either; you're probably thinking of how you don't gain the stat growth of the new class? That's on purpose. It does limit ideal options though, yeah.

If you don't want an M, you'd probably want to pick T instead for their alternative healing from songs. Alc can change into a Hexer pretty well, but... the alc is also a big source of damage for this party? You could get away with changing the protector into a physical bruiser class like L or R in exchange for making the alc an H or T, trading one support for a damage and a damage for a support.

tl;dr
M -> T
A -> H
P -> L or R (...which you said you didn't really like much)

You could change them into other things but it wouldn't be very efficient. M has overall averagey stats (and high tec) so honestly you could get away with turning it into anything, but it'd be a little meh as a front row and/or STR-based damage class, and the Alc makes a better hexer than the M (and can only work as H or T) P or M could work as a Survivalist but there's not much of a point unless you really, really wanted Efficiency.

I've heard that in classic mode, characters properly get the stat growths of the class they change into? Though if it's actually the retire feature in classic mode, you're actually using a different character, which is possibly why it works.

Is there any way to back up your story mode save and play some classic? I know there's some backup to sd card feature but I'm not sure what it does.

You can use Change Class in Classic mode to get the same effect as you do in Story, aka "retiring" whilst keeping the character, including their portrait and stat growth from their original class.

It's just that the normal Retire function isn't available in Story Mode, so you're stuck with the story character's stat growths from their original class.

You can't back up your save unless you have the digital copy of the game, and even then you can only do so via putting your 3DS's SD card into your computer and manually making a copy of the save.

I got the game Thursday. I'm in the third Stratum now. Story Mode. And man, I didn't expect that many changes! Most floors so far have been changed a lot. Some of the layout's still the same, while other parts are so different it took a while to wrap my head around it. Awesome.

I was greatly disappointed by Fenrir's 3D model. That...cartoon-ish abomination of a kitten just doesn't have the same effect as the original. Which didn't have a big effect either, but at least it looked like a proper enemy.

Gladsheim is nice. I like how it adds some enemies from the new stratum when you get to the next area, and the battle music is decent. I'm quite pleased with the story so far, too. It's nothing special, but it's neat. Especially that part where

The Highlander is a pretty cool class. Sacrificing HP for some strong moves and whatnot is neat, and I especially like the Spear Assist. Gunner seems ridiculously strong, but fragile, so I guess it evens out. The story mode party composition is okay, and with the grimoires they give you from labyrinth boxes you can get a good sense for the other classes, too.

Skill trees look good and organized. Giving some classes (Alchemist and Gunner, some others too?) immediate access to skills upon unlocking them frees up a nice chunk of skill points, resting is quick and easy, haven't had the chance to retire yet, and from what I can tell by reading here, I won't change classes at all.

Also, I'm back. Rejoice!

Just wait until you see

Changing class can work, but I don't think it's worth the compromise to the team. I changed my G to a D and it works okay even though they're a little fragile. They're good at landing binds and hard hitting. It is a little pointless to do so, given how limited the D feels in comparison to a G, but it's still pretty solid.

I think there's some interesting potential with changing class but not stat growths, I contemplated turning my M into a back rank P as they wouldn't need the vit but could still churn out the protective buffs and have better heals thanks to the higher tec.

Unfortunately, I changed my M into a T and it's kinda ruined my team. I only have access to res through grimoires and nectars and I can get refresh. The healing is also lacklusture so it's just not worked out.

Don't suppose stat and skill gains stack whilst changing class :X

stratum 5 was one of the best surprises i'd ever experienced in a video game

^Part of the reason I was not happy with the way EOU's story was told. It totally spoiled that early, and it was such a fantastic moment originally.

Well we've known about it since the first game, so maybe someone who was completely new to the series would be more surprised than us?

Having beat Area 4 and accessing Area 5, I do hope I don't have to beat Strata 6 with my ragtag team.

I don't think any other team would have an easy time dealing with party wide ailments, especially if the medic got disabled, but having a frontliner with very low defences and health is a real pain against bosses and hard hitting foes.

I like the Highlander, but I'm starting to doubt I know how to use him.

I got Bloody Offense but I rarely use it, same goes for Blood Fortune. I also barely use any of the HP draining skills. The only single-target one is Delayed Charge, and out of boss battles that seems kinda useless. For multi-target moves, Arthur and Frederica are just better.

Currently in the 4th Stratum. Just finished mapping the monstrosity that is floor 18, god that brings back memories. Floor Jump makes it so much easier. Now I'm looking forward to the rest of the stratum, though I'm a bit concerned about my habit of grinding 1-3 levels on the healing spring floor whenever I reach the next floor in each stratum.

Maxed Bloody Offense increases a row's damage by 50% I think, and the hp cost is negligible. Row switching is free, so the highlander can jump in the back for a turn to get the buff too. Honestly, Bloody Offense and Spear Assist or Delayed Charge is all the highlander needs to do, Bloody Offense being more important since Arthur wrecks face and eventually Fredrecia does too.

Having the all-hitting draining skills is eventually kinda nice if you don't have any good enemy skills to give him for it, but that only becomes relevant when the enemies are resisting all the elements so Bloody Offense+Arthur can't wipe scary fights. That's the most convenient way to deal with random battles when you have the TP to burn, really- casting Bloody Offense and a scary formula turn 1.

Sweet Jesus, Tumalu, that helped. A lot. I never even thought of switching rows. That's a feature I haven't even noticed until now! I'm not gonna go for the maxed out Bloody Offense just yet, I'm still tweaking the party a bit.

Just finished three boss fights, and those were great. Especially ! The gimmick of the original game was nice, but Untold's version is nicer. Difficult to get at first, but once you get it, it's smooth. Still tough though.

Spoilers ahoy!

46:25. Story Mode done (except for post game stuff and quests), time to tackle Classic Mode.

I was satisfied. The final battle was a bit meh, I expected more of a challenge, but it was still a pretty good fight. The story wrapped up nicely, and I liked how they fleshed out the personality of a bit more.

I didn't expect much from the story, but I was positively surprised. I wanted to know what happened next, even though I sort of knew, and the things that were new to Untold were pretty good.

EOU definitely had the best story so far. EOIII had the most complex story (I hate those three endings), but EOIV presented its story the best (might just be me, but I could feel the struggle that was going on there). The games just keep getting better, and now I'm excited for what the next title has in store.
