Cover looks...kinda generic, if you ask me. Will probably get the game when it gets released, since I never played Etrian Odyssey II before.

That box art looks very "Oh, brave hero, please protect this little princess! *clingy*". Meh

well, as stated elsewhere, these 'new' portraits are all pre-existing. They come form the artbooks etc. So, none of these is actually 'new'.
Furthermore, it seems as if these 'bonus' poses will come as purchasable DLC. Not as free QR code, not as plain feature in the retail version.
DLC you have to pay for.
And, honestly: I wouldn't pay for something that very well should be a mandatory thing in the retail version, left alone: What is it good for. We spent by now 5 games being perfectly capable of imagining our characters attitude. Having to pay for poses that just sort of might reflect their personality better seems a little ridiculous. Especially since these are, as said, just new poses, and maybe palette swaps. Not any fully new designs.

Whoa. If there's gonna be, like, four portraits for every character with this DLC, I'm going to have a LOT of fun.

If I've looked through the art book properly, if I've counted correctly only three characters would have a set of four "new" poses: The Protector girl as we've seen, the Medic girl and the Alchemist dude (if they include the one on the original EO's cover then I'm sold, he's got a mad dragon design on his clothes in that one). Some other classes like the Gunner girl and War Magus man have like one or two poses, but not enough to make a whole set.

After looking at a website with scans and stuff, it looks like the Princess from EO3 is available as DLC or maybe even in Classic Mode. I wonder if that means that Armoroad Skyseek Leader Lord Edward can be in too...! Now that'd be cool! :O
I'm getting insanely hyped for this game. I liked EO2's character portraits a LOT and it's so nice to see that they look good on the 3DS.

Plus new bosses and characters and stuff, which look really cool. I don't care how little they really put into the portrait DLC from here-out, it still all looks amazing.

Lets be honest here though... DLC (free or otherwise) is a bit more accessible and intuitive than QR codes anyway. I'd also say more consumer friendly, but im sure someone could debate me on that... needless to say, even if QR codes could have enough data, which would you honestly prefer to use? (that is assuming both are free)
the only thing about dlc is it's negative connotation it's gotten through it's poor misuse. I'm personally against locking PORTRAITS of all things behind something trivial like that (cut content is cut content)....
(...seriously. if they charge me for portraits... ANY charge... for PORTRAITS... im done with EO. done with EO. boycott. riots in the streets. the whole shebang.)
...in all seriousness though, im sure if its free dlc, it might just be to test the waters. i mean im not sure how said portraits would change up the UI, and not everyone might like having 16 protectors to choose from every time they want a protector. iunno.

More likely, these QR codes work like the ones in EO4. I.e. the actual content is already in the game, and the QR code just allows various promotional outlets to include exclusives. Of course, such 'exclusives' travel around the world within a day or so..
