Why would they say that? Aside the Story mode stuff, most of the other stuff we don't like are minor stuff.

The demo (Story mode only) was supposed to come out today, but is getting pushed back to Thursday.

A lot of reasons. But this late, it's probably an issue on Nintendo's end. Licensing, making sure all the legal stuff on the eshop is spelled out properly, maybe just a glitch in nintendo's servers that was keeping the download from working...lots of things can go wrong that only crop up right when you're ready to distribute the thing.

I preordered my copy last night, went ahead and purchased the theme, and now am very eager for tomorrow. I'm practically drooling. I wonder if it will be added at 12am tonight.

Atlus has failed me. Please let me know if anyone else sees it appear in the shop. Oh I really hope they do release it today. I'm debating if I want story mode or classic. I think I'll do classic first

Chances are it will be available some time around noon EDT, more likely 30 minutes after. That is usually when the eShop gets the available sales/software updates that didn't go live at midnight.
