so its begun. the wheels in my brain are turning. the optimising is beginning. the hybrid/options are starting.

so my team is starting to look like it'll end up going the route of

HL/DH/R
S/WM

i actually dont know how effective my "melee" war magus will end up in the back. or how well a dark hunter will replace hexer for ailments... but a couple skills on DH seem like the perfect happy compromise

can a veteran of the originals give me any insight on if backrow war magus using war edges is a thing or not? im kind of in an awkward positioning situation and if i go through with dark hunter theyre gonna be stuck to the middle of the front row...

I managed to gain enough money to spare buying this. Granted my expectations are a little low since I really didn't like the 1st EOU game, but hey, it is based on EO2, so it might be a bit better!

I think I posted before but my planned team was Highlander, Dark Hunter, War Magus, Gunner and Hexer. Looking at what EO1U's post-game is like though, I'm starting to think I should probably bring a Protector over the Highlander instead. We shall see =/

Of course, living in Australia means the game won't arrive for like 2 weeks. Ugh, but hopefully I'll be able to get the DLC during its free period then.

I've taken down the first two FOEs now... Those deer, oh man those deer, they have to be the strongest version in the franchise. I swear that the Raptor was easier. Loving the new version of the Alchemist, initially when the class skills got released and translated (prior to the Japanese release) it had sounded like they got worse, but nope. My Alchemist is just kicking ass and taking names.

I've also created a 5-manned Survivalist team for gathering. Oddly enough, leveling them in this game (even on Expert) doesn't seem to be anywhere near as bad as the original was like. Currently they are sitting at level 4 from going back and forth to the various gathering points over time.

One thing I've noticed with various events is that they don't properly take into context of what class or class portrait you are using. For example, when I do events with my Beast, I keep getting text about how the Beast is using their hands... It has paws not hands! I can understand and give some slack if it was the bear beast, but I'm using the wolf beast.

Got like a HUUUUGE portion of 3F mapped out and then suddenly - TWO WINGED FREAKS! And as if that wasn't enough, THEY (I forget the term) GOT FIRST STRIKE! T-T My two best fighters dead. What do I decide to do - try to run. I probably should have stood my ground and fought. AT least I might have stood a chance. Wiped out in two turns.

First Game Over. FOR A TOTALLY BULLSHIT SITUATION!
Oh you win this round Yggdrasil. But I'm coming for you. This isn't over yet. >:[ The fun's just getting started.

so after much considerations, weighing my options and whatnot...
...ive decided to stick to my guns and continue on with my group as it is. that is opposed to replacing my ronin with a beast or alchemist. i can sort of mitigate 1-shots with my princess' Dauntless order, but clearly its not as reliable as front guard or hit-taker...

I WILL FORGE ON!!!

however i may or may not drop my ronin later for a palm-focused alchemist. depends on how badly i need elemntal attacks. or how badly i want my princess to hit things really hard.

yknow... its funny how the last member i could decide on was ronin.... and i only chose ronin because i wanted a heavy hitter... and yet theyre lagging behind my highlander and even war magus in that department.... hm

EDIT: didnt make it 5 minutes after posting before i thought "yknow what? why am i being stubborn about this when alchemist offers literally 3 times the utility to my group without adding any real negatives?" so yeah.
....im going to have an overly touchy alchemist.


.........any name suggestions? id love to see what you guys could think of. im a fan of choosing the blonde one and naming him.... Palmer 8)

I think it's sad that you don't feel it's worth it. I really do. I think you've attached some over-the-top expectations on it because you don't think it could ever replace the first game when in reality everything that I'm playing looks and FEELS like the same Etrian Odyssey games that we've ever played. In fact in many ways I absolutely ADORE this game way over the 4th one.

They've put out a high quality product but all you can see is "it's probably a crappy remake".

The game is so highly revamped. There are puzzles to solve, the grimoire system has improved to something that I absolutely LOVE rather than disregard. The addition of the Cafe is absolute ridiculous fun wondering every time you get new recipes if you'll have all the ingredients and JUST WHAT the heck is "smelly monster".

I feel like the took all the best parts from EO2, EOU1, ED, and PQ. I think you're seriously cheating yourself out of a treat because you can't get past the "remake" word.


Edit: this kinda came out really dramatic when I read back on it, and I hope you don't think I intended it to be overly dramatic. It is, of course, your choice. ^_^ I'm just trying to convey how much I'm enjoying this game and wish you were playing with us.

Yeah, I felt they went backwards in some ways with the auto walk function. They still just don't have the recipe quite right. I think I liked EOU1's better so far. At least it behaves better than the PQ version

I keep getting so close to killing Chimera. If I were to do 1 FOE fight, my entire team would gain a level and that should be more than enough to be able to kill him with ease. However, part of me is just outright determined to try and down him at 14.

I'm so torn between starting with a more traditional group or keeping Team Crazy Cat Lady. It's just rough without a good source of elemental damage or ailments. Oi.
