I just recently made it to floor 26.
I beat the Overlord 3 times. First time was to see what he was like. The second time was to see what would happen if I said "No" to fighting the second form. The third time was for real.
It is fun, isn't it? I think it's one of the most beautiful environments (together with stratum four)

Well I just recently added a War Magus and a Protector to my guild. I'm levelling those.
My current setup is:
Landsknecht / Ronin / Protector
Hexer / War Magus

I think the introduction of the War Magus in EO2 was an attempt to make Hexers more useful. Only throwing status effects may help in long battles, but doesn't make for an allround useful character. A War Magus would compensate a little for that by building attacks off the Hexer's status effects. The problem with War Magi is that they have a double role that they can't perform both sides of well at the same time. Their offensive side really requires a Hexer's status effects, otherwise they're virtually useless. Their healer side though requires significant investment of skill points, and will take up most of their time in battles; especially the long battles where you want to use the Hexer/War Magus combination.
In my opinion, Hexers, while being really cool roleplaying characters aren't that useful, unless you use the game killer Revenge skill. War Magi, while being fairly sufficient as healers, just aren't as good at it as Medics. And if you're not pairing them with a Hexer you might as well get a real Medic instead.
Then again, the number crunchers will discover ways to exploit any battle system anyway, so you could just ignore the whole thing and go with the characters you like for their personalities. Honestly, as long as you have a reasonably balanced party, you'll do okay through most of the game.

Oh I find my Hexer EXTREMELY useful.
First round starts: Poison
End of round: ~300 damage to all enemies
