Favorite Books and Current Reads

I'm brutal to my paperbacks. xD My copy of Fellowship of the Ring, which is about 11 years old now, has a few pages that have fallen out.

The Hobbit, including full-color illustrations and pristine slipcase: $7.00
Elantris (I hope Sanderson is as good as they say): $6.25
Everything and More: .70¢ (Yes, only seventy cents before tax.)
I Am the Messenger: FREE! 'cause a page is falling out and we can't sell it in that condition. Awwwww yeah!

Plus I got a free math textbook because apparently I just can't stop wanting to do more math. @_@;

@Maxine - I do have a Nook, actually! However, I hardly ever use it... ^ 3^;;; I feel really guilty for neglecting it, even though it's an inanimate object! It's just too easy/inexpensive for me to get used books at work right now.

Today's Happy Birthday To Me book haul consists of only one title, but it means I'm only three books away from completing the Culture series by Iain M. Banks. <excited wiggle>

Iain Banks.. I read his Excession once. Is that part of the same series? It was pretty good SF.

Now I'm vaguely curious what goes on before and after that book.

I'm of the opinion that the best way to discover a series is randomly and not at the beginning. Will you understand everything as well as you would if you read the series sequentially? Probably not, but you don't really need to if it's a good author. I've gotten into some great series this way.

I've never tried reading a series from the middle....... but doesn't that kind of ruin the books preceding the one you've just read?

Not really. I mean, sure it ruins the surprises (well, typically), but it doesn't ruin the presentation. Think about your favorite books/movies/games. Were they less fun to read/watch/play the second time just because you knew what the ending was? Does knowing that Darth Vader is Luke's father ruin Star Wars? Does seeing who gets off the train in the first episode of Baccano ruin the entire series? I'm willing to say "no" to those questions, personally.
