I dunno about "never recover." It seems to have sold well enough so far. And it actually sounds like a really good book. I'll be waiting for the paperback, though, 'cause I ain't spendin' no $35 on a hardcover...

Finished Going Postal last night. (Er, technically this morning.) I do believe I liked Making Money more, but that's because I like Moist better once he hits his stride (why does that sound dirty?), which he does a lot earlier in Making Money. Most likely because of the practice he had in Going Postal. Anyway, really good book. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes semi-benevolent tricksters.

Now if I could only get my copy of Making Money back so I could read it again...

Was The Count Of Monte Cristo that thick? I remember a book nowhere near that size.
Did you get the sequel to The Neverending Story too?
Also, whatever that Mucha book is, the cover looks like it crawled out of a tarot deck.

This copy of The Count of Monte Cristo is unabridged. It's almost twice as thick as my cousin's paperback copy. Perhaps yours was abridged also? I almost can't stand to read abridged things. I always wonder what was taken out and why.
And I didn't know there was a sequel! : O Will get.
I might upload a video or a series of photos so you guys can see the ridiculously gorgeous interior of the Mucha book.

@Maxine - Hehe, yeah, I picked it up because of the publisher and read the back. Sounded interesting enough!

Not pictured in the photo is a well worn copy of the works of Thoreau, an Everyman's Library edition. /happy sigh

I, too, have the unabridged book of Count of Monte Cristo. ... I can vouch for that size of it. .... I still have to read that bastard, too.

Trifkin, I just finished The Wise Man's Fear the other day, and I agree with you on pretty much everything you said. Felurian was pretty ridiculous, and Kvothe was very vocal about his lack of money, but it was a pretty fun read regardless. The Cthaeh was really cool, I loved the idea of it. The Adem were pretty interesting too, though they felt like an amalgamation of a bunch of / tropes.

Agreed on all counts! Once I got past my discomfort at the aforementioned tropes, though, I enjoyed the culture of the Adem. Although many parts had me humming Eye of the Tiger and picturing a cheesy 80s training montage. I'm glad you liked it! :D

Great. Just great. Now I'll be picturing this when I get that far:

I finished The Casual Vacancy yesterday. I can understand why people works try and compare, as normally an author will stick to the same sort of story, even if the threads are different. But to be disappointed because it's not Harry Potter is stupid. It's clearly not going to be like Harry Potter as she clearly stated that it wouldn't be. Then compare the covers and Vacancy is bland and grown up. It's not a kids book, there are tons of very mature themes, most of them painfully uncomfortable, it's not as uncomfortable as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo sex scenes; but some of the themes carry over.

It's depressing and had little resolution, but I don't think it's a huge departure from real life.
