"softer"? Actually, that was my complaint about that actor. She looked like a flippin whispy snowflake.
^_^ I imagine Denna with these harsh oriental almond-shaped eyes and a small smirk on her face that looks like she's having SO much fun but at the same time just reeks of the villainy that lies beneath. And she doesn't walk like she has a broom handle for a spine - the walk of a general- but that delicate float that only a few women can master in high heels - the kind that if you put her in an elegant dress you'd mistake her for a queen.
Maybe that's what you mean by "softer"? That she needs to act more like a lady instead of a soldier?
But at the same time, though I think the woman is going for a "soldier" sort of act, she can't really pull it off, and there's just no "intensity" to her.

No, not at all like a lady. Mord-Sith are excellent soldiers.
Rather, the live-action Denna is much too cold. She's supposed to have auburn hair, and I imagined her as fuller in the face, with a softer outline, while the armored leather, tight braid, and wicked amusement offer strength. She's far more controlled and, rather than be sadistically cruel, she's much more like a cat at play. She loves her job and relishes training Richard...
[spoiler]
But as the training commences and she gets pulled into Richard's charismatic warmth, Denna becomes sadder with her task. While she has the art of being a Mord-Sith, she starts to lack the passion that drives her at first. But I see her as much softer in more appearance and attitude.
I never viewed her as a villain at all. Perhaps because I encountered the Mord-Sith in Books 2-4 before reading Denna's story in Book 1, so I have a much more sympathetic understanding of Mord-Sith, and that attitude affected how I viewed Denna.
Actually, live-action Denna looks like a different Mord-Sith, not Denna.

That was difficult to explain without Book 3+ spoilers @_@

I'm currently reading a Harry Potter fanfic called "My Immortal." It's supposedly one of the worst ever written (I still think that title goes to Half-Life: Fulllife Consequences). I'd link to it but for explicit material like (and I quote): "he put his boy’s thingy in mine and we HAD SEX."
Sorry, I know I just lowered the general IQ of this thread D:

Yes, I meant intentional ^^;
@Legend of the Seeker
Well, the writing is terrible, the characters are TV-pretty and vapid, and the slow-mo effects are cringe-worthy. But I hate TV, so there is my bias.
But, I agree, they're doing their own thing. That's fine, but I prefer the original source material. I'm one of those people.
@Flight Reading
;____; gaaaaah I still can't decide if I should read something new or something old. I'm trying to calculate how many books I'll need. Assuming I only read on the plane or in the airport, it's roughly 13 hours of reading. I read an average of 70-90 pages an hour, so...

So, I thiiiiiiink I'm probably going to bring these books for the plane:
Luck in the Shadows
Stalking Darkness
Traitor's Moon (?)
Shadow's Return (?)
I'm pretty sure I want to bring the first 2 books, but the decision is whether I should bring BOTH the 3rd and 4th, just the 3rd, or just the 4th.
Books 1+2 are one story arc, whereas 3 is a stand-alone and 4 starts a new storyline.
All 4 miiiight be overkill, but if I'm looking at at least 12 hours of reading.... plus I've read the first 2 books enough that I'm probably going to skim/skip a couple of pages...
>_> I ordered duplicate copies of Books 1+2, so if I'm really lucky they'll arrive in time for me to strip them. That way, if I need to ditch them for the return trip I won't feel guilty.
ETA: Why do the Japanese have so much more awesome book covers than we do?!
