So I heard they're reprinting Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark...
...with new illustrations!
I'm torn between "WTF!" and "yeah I get why" because, hello, ask anyone who grew up reading those that hands-down the original illustrations were the scariest part of those books. I know people still traumatized by them!
Horribly terrifying, and it earned the series a distinction as a banned book throughout the 90s, so I get why they'd get someone a little less OMGMYSOULWHAAAA ...
But, c'mon!
I need to invest in a boxset of the original glorious nightmare-fuel before it's too late.
I MEAN COME ON LOOK AT THAT FUCKING HORSE SKELETON
aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh now I have to go stare at cute kitties being helpless to cleanse my soul

.. I never read but, would it be odd of me to say that those covers don't phase me... they look like they are trying way too hard to be creepy and it fails miserably. And the first image just looks like some fucking aliens that I lose all respect for it the moment my eyes laid on it. -_-;
I'm immune to horror it seems. No, not completely. The Ring when the girl comes out of the TV - THAT'S creepy. It was delicious. It didn't try too hard except the girl had these strange odd movements and she just CAME OUT OF A TV. ^_^ Simplicity!! ... what else has scared me... hrrm... Oh!! DEFINITELY the scene from the first Saw movie when they turn on the lights finally and the full "trap" is revealed. ^_^ Aww, fun and fun.
...... .... But you can tell by my reaction that it's not really "scary" as much as an appreciation for the scary. >_< I am immune to scary movies and scary stories just bore me to tears. <_< But... I want to be frightened. T-T Such a let down.

Those illustrations don't have any effect on me, either. And like Maxine, I think they just seem to be trying too hard. Reminds me of those horror novels for tweens/teens.
I do enjoy horror, but not the hollywood-style shock movies. The "boo!!" type of scare is just startling and is not lasting (and that's on the odd occasion you don't see it coming a mile away.) I prefer slow, loving, caressing mind-warps. The kind you don't realise are frightening until a couple weeks later. Best are horror movies that don't need gore. I also like beautiful horrors such as Tale of Two Sisters, one of my favourites for its gorgeous scenery and score.
I liked the first few Saw movies, but it got kinda old after the millionth sequel.
