Water is tricky. Magical maneaters sometimes avoid it, but rabid animals might go for you even if they generally suck at swimming. Be sure to bring something to pick them off at a distance.

Yeah, water seems precarious to me. Oil rigs are often cited as great zombie hold out fortresses because of their isolation, but those are super isolated. Lakes and smaller bodies of water seem not big enough to wait on for any length of time.
I think the trick is to just avoid population density. Cities are obviously mistakes, massive, massive, mistakes. Rural areas give you the time and space to set up a defensible position and also insure that population density is low and thus limits the rate at which infection increases, giving you time to band up with other survivors, and set yourself up. The rate of infection in cities and suburbs would be simply ridiculous.
I have a hard time believing that any city dweller, like myself, would have a great deal of luck surviving an extended infection. Assuming that the zombies are limited to the strength of the infected body (and aren't 'Magical' in anyway), and even assuming the "PCP Strength" of not feeling pain, it would be pretty easy to board up and blockade the entrance to my apartment and not be infected. But thats assuming I have the time to do it, and also that the infection will be quelled and controlled in a reasonable amount of time by the CDC, military, etc. With the food I have on hand, and filling every container in my home with water, I could probably get by for a month or so, but likely no longer. And stepping out into an infected city is a death sentence, theres no way around it.

Re: Show Yourselves! (Photo Thread)
I wasn't actually advocating the oil rig idea. I prefaced it by saying that water seemed like a poor plan, and finished it out by saying that it was overly isolated, implying the problems that come with being stuck in one place for too long.
Also, this is all a bit off topic. I wonder if a mod or someone similar might migrate this to its own thread or something. Or simply ban all those involved.

The advantage of living in a city is the supply density. Which will probably be guarded by things that are trying to kill you.
