I met somebody interesting today.
It was an old man. He had trouble reading something without his glasses, so I gave him assistance. It just so happened that the particular field was something I knew a bit about, so we talked some more and I helped him shop. I gave him some resources and connections to help him save money, and of course I gave him information about me for future enquiries.
But then he was confused about my title.
"Isn't that a man's name?"
"Yes."
"But I thought..."
"I am a man."
He then stopped and looked me over in disbelief.
"Oh. It's okay. It doesn't matter. We are all the same. I'm special, too." he says as he rolls up his sleeve. On his arms I saw a series of numbers. My stomach began to sink but to make sure, I gestured "What is that for?".
Turns out he was one of the many Jewish civilians who were forced into German concentration camps during the Holocaust. Hearing my fears confirmed, I dropped my bag and extended my arms. He hugged me and shed a tear as he gave me a kiss over my heart. I was able to hold back the tears of my own as I told him how strong and fortunate he is to have lived far more life than I ever will.
I mean, I'm not Jewish or anything. We are nothing alike and I do not know how he connected us together like that but I'm still glad he did. Glad he was able to share his legacy.
