Playing the PS2 version on my TV via my PS3 makes it look like ... well, garbage. There's a sharp difference between the standard filters and the HD smoothing.
Even classic on the MvC2 360/PS3 looks better than the PS2 version I got. It's ... ridiculously bad. It is less of a concern than the online but damn, it's a nice touch.

Like I said, the 360/PS3 Classic looks quite fine on it's own, especially super close-up like that on a low-resolution shot. I need a way to screencapture my PS3 >> It's highly pixelated and blown-up on my TV when playing off the PS2 disc (and, before anyone asks, upscaling and all that jazz is disabled and it looks the same on my PS2 >>).

And here's links (not posting the images since they're all huge~)

That classic (full screened) is more comparable to what I'm talking about. Compare that to Smooth or Crisp. I had a nice gif from neoGAF but I guess I forgot to save it
Flashed between the three full screen shots to compare. The difference is pretty obvious.

If you clip out a shot of something at a reduced resolution then, yes, it'll look fine regardless of the quality (okay, not regardless but ... whatever). Reduce a 1280x1024 image to 640x480 and compare which one "looks" better.
They all look fine at the lower resolutions but the actual resolution you're playing at, Classic begins to look bad. If not "bad" at least considerably worse to Smooth/Crisp. If you can't see that then you probably need to get your eyes checked.

Uh ... did you actually check the links I put for the full screen shots? The Classic-Smooth-Crisp image has noticeable details, yes, but it isn't as clear as a full screen image.
Cropped from the fullscreen shots available here:

Edit: Again, I also play on a giant TV so it gets even more noticeable. That said, it is obvious even on my 19" side monitor.
