The Ys I&II OST CD doesn't give any details about who made it or anything. I looked it up though, and the composer is none other than Yūzō Koshiro :) It sounds very different from his EO soundtracks though. It has a very '80s sound actually.

Only some of the PC-88 versions of the Ys I & II music were composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

Every other version/remix was arranged by someone else.
... and since Ys I & II have been remade nearly a dozen times now, there are a lot of remixes/arrangements.

The PC-88/98 versions of the music in Ys I & II sound quite similar to EO music, actually.

I need to replace my computer speakers and I have been contemplating whether or not I want to move from 2.1 to 5.1 surround sound. Ultimately I decided I'll just buy a cheap 2.1 setup and pick up a 5.1 system when I am back out on my own. Spending a lot on audio or video has never been a thing for me (unless it has to do with fashion) though it would be nice to just relax and drown myself in the music.

Is anything >2.0 even worth it? I mean, two speakers should be enough for two ears, right? And if anything, most speakers need less bass, not more.

The difference between 2.0 and 5.1 is pretty dramatic ... there's a real gain for the additional speakers in directionality of sound. It's more for building ambiance and immersing oneself in music/sound.

Edit: Personally, it's hard to explain why surround is great but there's a lot of subtlety in audio these days in the directionality. Many headphones these days try to mimic it, at least slightly, by having multiple speakers in them to give some sense of direction.

Surround is just the difference between a sound that's supposed to be behind you being actually heard behind you.

As for more-or-less bass, most 2.0 are heavy bass because, surprise, there's no subwoofer to handle the bass otherwise. They go heavier on the bass because there's nothing else to handle it for them.

It also depends on the kind of speakers you get. A lot of gaming PC speakers tend to be very bass heavy (to the point of sounding rather muddy).

All that said, I'd stick with 2.1 unless you can do a proper 5.1 set-up. They do you know good if you don't, you know, actually set them up right.
